Norðadalsskarð Pass Road — Tórshavn to Norðadalur via Streymoy Mountain Pass
Old mountain pass the tunnels forgot.
Before the tunnel network strangled the Faroe Islands into easy connectivity, passes like Norðadalsskarð were the only way between communities. This road climbs from the Tórshavn side through tight switchbacks above the treeline — which in the Faroes means above the scattered rowan scrub — and crests the saddle between Streymoy’s central peaks before dropping hard into Norðadalur valley on the northwest side. The pass sits around 380 metres and is fully exposed to North Atlantic weather. The gravel surface deteriorates sharply on the descending western face, where runoff has carved channels across the road and loose scree sits on the edge of the carriageway. Watch for sheep on every blind corner — they own this road.
Most stock SUVs with decent clearance can manage this in dry summer conditions, but the shoulder seasons turn it greasy and genuinely committing. It’s rated as moderate because the exposure and surface demand respect, not because the technical challenge is extreme. No permit needed. Tórshavn is your fuel and supply point — stock up there. The road gets used by locals but is increasingly bypassed by tunnel traffic, which means you may have it entirely to yourself. Drive it for the scenery and the history — this is how Faroese islanders actually moved between settlements for generations.
