Ærgi Upland Track — Sandavágur to Fjallavatn Lake via Vágar Interior Plateau
Boggy plateau, big lake, zero company.
Vágar is known internationally for the Trælanípa lake-above-the-sea illusion, but the island’s interior is almost entirely ignored by visitors — and that suits the handful of 4×4 drivers who know about the Ærgi upland track. Starting from Sandavágur on the eastern shore, the track climbs through old sheep grazing ground onto the plateau that forms Vágar’s backbone, then pushes northwest across open bog and fractured basalt toward Fjallavatn, the largest lake in the Faroe Islands. The ground up here holds water like a sponge year-round. Deep peat ruts, hidden rock shelves, and lateral drainage cuts make this a genuine test of vehicle control at low speed. The lake itself, ringed by cliffs on its northwest side, sits at around 150 metres elevation and feels utterly removed from the tourist-heavy roads below.
Expect this route to punish anything without real clearance and committed 4WD. Locking differentials are useful. Tyre pressures down. The surface alternates between sodden peat and loose basalt gravel with no warning. Best window is July to August — the rest of the year this track ranges from marginal to impassable. No formal permit. Sørvágur has the nearest fuel on Vágar. Cell service disappears on the plateau. There is no rescue infrastructure up here — if you bury a wheel in soft peat, you sort it yourself or wait a long time. That’s the deal. Worth every bit of it.
