Provincial Road 399 — Gypsumville to Pinaymootang via Lake St. Martin West Shore Backroads

Interlake limestone and flood-plain gumbo.

Moderate

PR 399 from Gypsumville west toward the Pinaymootang First Nation community doesn’t get talked about, and after the catastrophic 2011 Assiniboine River flood that inundated much of this corridor, large sections were rebuilt on raised grade — but the side roads and lake access tracks that branch off toward Lake St. Martin’s west shore are still raw, low-lying, and heavily seasonal. The limestone bedrock just below the surface means drainage is either perfect or non-existent, and the clay over-burden sections turn into axle-deep gumbo after any significant rain. Watch for the causeway section near the lake outlet — it floods with little warning in high-water years.

Rated Moderate in dry summer conditions, this route earns Difficult fast when the weather turns. A stock 4WD with decent ground clearance can handle the main PR 399 corridor in summer, but the lake access spurs want a high-clearance rig with good mud tires and a recovery kit. Best season is mid-July through September. No permit required. Fuel in Gypsumville before heading north — there’s nothing in Pinaymootang. What you get is an honest slice of the Manitoba Interlake: big skies, limestone outcrops, waterfowl in numbers that’ll stop you cold, and almost no other traffic.
