Starve Hollow State Recreation Area Backcountry Fire Road
Family-friendly fire roads above the lake
Starve Hollow’s backcountry fire roads offer a mellow introduction to Indiana off-roading, winding through second-growth oak-hickory forest above the lake’s eastern shore. The main route follows the ridge system for eight miles, passing through areas burned in controlled fires that opened up long views across the lake and surrounding hills. Named for early settlers who nearly starved during a harsh winter here in the 1810s, the area now provides excellent wildlife viewing with healthy deer and turkey populations.
Stock high-clearance vehicles handle these well-maintained gravel and dirt roads without breaking a sweat. Spring wildflower displays are spectacular, though summer can get buggy near the water. No permits required for day use, and dispersed camping is allowed along the fire roads with a backcountry permit. Vallonia has gas and supplies five miles out. Perfect for families wanting to sample Indiana backcountry without the drama of technical terrain.
