Hoosier National Forest Forest Road 209 Tower Ridge Technical Loop

Limestone ledges and timber history south of Bloomington

Difficult

Forest Road 209 cuts through some of the gnarliest terrain in the Hoosier National Forest, where limestone shelves drop into seasonal creek beds that’ll test your departure angles. The loop starts near Story and winds through old-growth hardwood stands that loggers worked in the 1800s, with the fire tower overlook at Tower Ridge serving as the halfway point where you can glass the Monroe Reservoir valley below. Hickory Ridge Creek crossing comes up fast after mile marker 7 – scout it first because spring runoff turns it into a rock-hopping technical challenge.

This route demands high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and recovery gear – the limestone ledges will scrape anything lower. Best tackled during dry months from June through October when creek levels drop and the clay doesn’t turn into axle-deep gumbo. No permits needed but fuel up in Bloomington because there’s nothing for 30 miles once you’re committed. You’ll earn solitude in some of Indiana’s most rugged country, with dispersed camping spots along the ridge that overlook the reservoir at sunset.
