Brown County Hills Backcountry Explorer Route

Indiana's wildest backcountry maze

Easy

Brown County’s maze of gravel township roads and old logging tracks creates Indiana’s best backcountry exploring, winding through 900-foot hills that feel more like Kentucky than the Midwest. This unmarked route connects fire tower roads, abandoned homesteads, and forgotten cemeteries scattered through the roughest terrain between Nashville and Bloomington. The key waypoint is Weed Patch Hill fire tower, accessible only by a rocky two-track that climbs 300 feet in half a mile through dense hardwood forest.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent weather — these clay-based roads turn treacherous when wet. Any high-clearance vehicle can handle dry conditions, but 4WD recommended during spring thaw or after storms. Best explored during fall color season (October) or late spring (May) when wildflowers carpet the forest floor. No permits required and multiple primitive camping spots exist along ridge tops. Fuel up in Nashville and carry extra water — cell service is nonexistent once you leave the main roads. This is old Indiana at its wildest, where you can spend days without seeing another soul.
