Morgan-Monroe State Forest Backcountry Circuit
Central Indiana's best backcountry loop
Morgan-Monroe State Forest’s backcountry circuit strings together fire roads, old logging trails, and timber access routes across 24,000 acres of rolling hills and deep ravines. The route passes through the historic Low Gap area where Depression-era CCC crews built trails, then climbs to Yellowwood Lake overlook before dropping into Bean Creek hollow where spring wildflowers carpet the forest floor.
High-clearance 4WD recommended for creek crossings and steep climbs, though stock vehicles can manage during dry conditions. Spring mud season (March-April) makes sections impassable. Pack provisions – no services within the forest boundaries. Dispersed camping permitted in designated areas. Best run May through October when roads are firm and wildflowers peak. This route offers classic Hoosier backcountry experience with good camping opportunities and occasional wildlife sightings including deer, turkey, and black bear.
