Lake Monroe Paynetown State Recreation Area
Paynetown sits on the southern shore of Lake Monroe, Indiana’s largest inland lake, offering both developed camping and day-use areas. The boat ramps and fishing docks make this a popular spot with locals, especially on summer weekends. Several camping loops provide electric hookups, while the day-use areas offer picnic tables and lake access. The swimming beach gets packed in summer, but the fishing areas stay relatively quiet.
The recreation area sits about 10 minutes south of Bloomington via Highway 37, making it an excellent base camp for exploring Morgan-Monroe State Forest and the northern Hoosier National Forest trails. Firewood and ice are available at the gatehouse, and Bloomington offers full resupply options including outdoor gear shops and auto parts stores.
