Charles C. Deam Wilderness Pine Hills Loop
Indiana's wildest limestone wilderness loop
The Pine Hills Loop cuts through the heart of Charles C. Deam Wilderness, where limestone ridges drop into steep hollows carved by centuries of water flow. This 8-mile circuit follows old logging roads and game trails through Indiana’s largest federally designated wilderness, crossing Hickory Creek three times before climbing the technical ascent to Pine Hills overlook. The route demands careful navigation as blazes are sparse and the terrain shifts from creek bottoms to 200-foot limestone bluffs without warning.
Moderate to difficult depending on conditions, requiring high-clearance 4WD for the creek crossings and steep limestone climbs. Best tackled April through October when creek levels are manageable, though spring runs can turn crossings into mini-rapids. No permits needed, but dispersed camping is allowed only at designated sites. Bring recovery gear and extra water — cell service dies once you drop into the hollows. This is raw Indiana backcountry that’ll remind you why the pioneers called these hills home.
