Cordell Hull Lock and Dam Service Road
TVA river bottomland wildlife corridor
The Cordell Hull service road system follows Tennessee Valley Authority maintenance routes along the Cumberland River, threading between massive flood-control infrastructure and pristine river bottom habitat. Built in the 1970s for dam construction access, these gravel roads now provide backdoor entry to some of Middle Tennessee’s best waterfowl hunting grounds and fishing spots. The highlight is the levee road that runs 8 miles through Defeated Creek bottomlands, where bald eagles nest and wild turkeys roost in centuries-old oak trees.
Easy to moderate difficulty makes this perfect for stock high-clearance vehicles, though spring flooding can close sections for weeks. Gravel surface stays solid year-round except during major rain events. No permits required, but hunting seasons restrict access October through January. Cell service is decent near the dam but fades in the bottomlands. Great family-friendly introduction to Tennessee backcountry driving, with plenty of wildlife viewing and fishing opportunities along the way.
