Catoosa Wildlife Management Area Ridge Runner Mining Circuit

Coal country reclaimed for elk and exploration.

Moderate

This 14-mile loop follows old strip mine haul roads across reclaimed Cumberland Mountain ridges where coal companies carved terraces into the landscape from the 1960s through 1980s. The route climbs to 2,400 feet at Frozen Head overlook, offering views across the Crab Orchard Mountains while passing through grasslands where Tennessee’s reintroduced elk herd often grazes during early morning and late evening hours. Abandoned mining equipment still rusts in the hollows—dragline cables, conveyor foundations, and the occasional forgotten hardhat.

Moderate difficulty with steep climbs on loose shale and seasonal muddy conditions during Tennessee’s wet months. High-clearance 4WD recommended for the steeper sections, though careful stock truck drivers can manage most of it during dry conditions. No permits required but hunting seasons from October through January may restrict access to certain areas. Best visited April through September for both weather and elk activity. The wildlife management area offers dispersed camping at designated spots. It’s a unique glimpse into Appalachian industrial history with genuine wildlife payoffs for patient observers.
