Obed Wild and Scenic River Emory Creek Technical Gorge Access
Sandstone gorge technical descent to wild rivers.
This gnarly 8-mile descent drops 1,200 feet through Pennsylvanian sandstone into the Obed River gorge system, following remnants of narrow-gauge railroad grades that once hauled coal from the plateau rim. The route passes through Nemo Bridge—a concrete arch spanning Clear Creek that’s been crumbling since the 1920s—before threading between massive sandstone boulders and crossing Emory Creek at the notorious Devil’s Breakfast Table rapids. Rock crawlers and kayakers share this access, creating an odd mix of rigs and boats at the bottom.
Difficult technical rating with serious consequences for mistakes—sandstone ledges, off-camber traverses, and potential for vehicle damage on sharp rock faces. Requires experienced 4WD with skid plates, recovery gear, and preferably a spotter for the trickiest sections. No permits needed but check water levels before descending since flash floods can trap vehicles. Best tackled March through October when creek crossings are manageable. This isn’t a casual weekend cruise—it’s for drivers who want to earn their access to some of Tennessee’s wildest whitewater country.
