Tennessee Valley Authority Melton Hill Dam Backcountry Fire Road Network
TVA fire roads through atomic age ridge country
This network of TVA fire roads cuts through the ridge-and-valley country east of Oak Ridge, following maintenance routes built to access power transmission corridors in the 1940s. The main route climbs Copper Ridge through second-growth oak forest, passing several abandoned coal mining operations from the early 1900s before dropping down to scenic overlooks of Melton Hill Lake on the Clinch River. The technical challenge comes from steep, narrow climbs with loose shale surfaces and a handful of creek crossings where the roads dip through hollows between ridges.
Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent weather — the shale gets slick when wet but stock high-clearance vehicles handle it fine in dry conditions. Spring wildflowers make April-May ideal, while fall colors peak in October. No permits required for the fire roads, but stay on marked routes since you’re surrounded by Oak Ridge National Laboratory security zones. Dispersed camping allowed on TVA land away from transmission lines. Good cell coverage on the ridgetops. It’s a solid introduction to Tennessee’s ridge country without the rock-crawling intensity of the more famous trails.
