Dugas Road to Lake Pleasant
Desert mining road through saguaro country
Dugas Road follows an old mining track from the 1800s through the heart of the Hieroglyphic Mountains, connecting the Agua Fria River crossing to Lake Pleasant Regional Park. The route passes through classic Sonoran Desert with towering saguaro cacti and ancient petroglyphs carved into volcanic rock faces by the Hohokam people centuries ago. During spring runoff, the Agua Fria River crossing can be substantial, requiring careful navigation of loose sand and shifting channels that have trapped unwary drivers.
This easy-to-moderate trail is accessible to stock high-clearance vehicles most of the year, but the river crossing demands respect during winter and spring months. Check water levels before attempting – monsoon rains can turn the crossing impassable for days. No permits needed for the route, but Lake Pleasant charges day-use fees. Best driven October through April when desert temperatures are tolerable. Multiple primitive camping spots exist along the route, and the area sees regular use by Phoenix-area overlanders seeking weekend desert adventure close to the city.
