Cumberland Plateau Windrock Trail System
Tennessee's ultimate mining heritage trail system
The Windrock Trail System cuts through the heart of Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, offering 300+ miles of marked trails across former coal mining territory that’s been transformed into the state’s most comprehensive off-road playground. The main circuit follows old mining roads up to elevation 3,000+ feet, passing abandoned tipples and equipment while navigating technical rock gardens and steep grades. Trail 15 leads to the scenic overlook at Brimstone Recreation Area, where you can see for miles across the Smoky Mountains on clear days.
Difficulty ranges from moderate gravel roads suitable for stock trucks to expert-level rock crawling that demands lockers, armor, and recovery gear. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though winter snow can make higher elevations impassable. Day passes run $25, camping available on-site with full hookups. Fuel up in Oliver Springs before heading in — cell service is spotty throughout the system. This isn’t just trail riding; it’s exploring Tennessee’s industrial heritage while testing your rig’s limits on some of the most varied terrain in the Southeast.
