Keweenaw Peninsula Copper Harbor Mining District Backcountry Loop

Technical mining roads at Michigan's northern edge

Difficult

The Copper Harbor Mining District Loop follows the skeleton of roads that once hauled copper ore from the mines that made Michigan the nation’s copper capital in the 1800s. Starting from the historic Copper Harbor lighthouse, the route climbs through the ruins of the Cliff Mine and Delaware Mine complexes, where massive stone foundations and rusted machinery tell the story of America’s first mineral rush. The challenging Brockway Mountain grade demands low-range 4WD as it climbs 700 feet in less than two miles, threading between mine shafts that drop straight into the earth.

This is difficult technical driving over loose rock, exposed bedrock, and steep grades that will test both driver skill and vehicle capability. A well-built 4WD with rock sliders, skid plates, and aggressive tires is essential—stock vehicles will struggle with the steeper pitches and sharp rocks. June through September offers the best conditions, though early season snow lingers on Brockway Mountain well into May. No permits required for the historic sites, but respect private property boundaries. The payoff is stepping into Michigan’s mining heritage while enjoying some of the most spectacular views in the Great Lakes region from the continent’s edge.
