Keweenaw Peninsula Copper Range Mining Roads
Copper country mining road network
This 35-mile network connects the ghost towns of Central Mine, Cliff Mine, and Phoenix through the heart of the Keweenaw’s copper country. The main spine follows old mining haul roads that carried ore from the Cliff Mine down to shipping points on Lake Superior, with grades steep enough that loaded wagons needed brake teams of oxen. Technical highlights include the approach to Delaware Mine where loose tailings create challenging climbs, and the notorious Copper Falls crossing where spring runoff can turn a simple ford into a genuine water obstacle.
Difficult rating due to steep grades, loose surfaces, and frequent water crossings that can change dramatically with weather. Requires high-clearance 4WD with low-range and skid protection – copper mine tailings are sharp and unforgiving. Best May through October, though early season brings the most water challenges. No permits needed for most routes, but respect private mining claims still active in the area. The payoff is genuine industrial archaeology and some of the most remote country in Michigan’s UP.
