Livingstone Creek to Ethel Lake — Duncan Creek Mining Loop

Placer ghosts and alders north of Mayo.

Difficult

North of Mayo, the Duncan Creek drainage was worked hard by placer miners in the early twentieth century and the roads they punched through the spruce never really recovered. This loop branches off the Silver Trail near the Mayo-Elsa corridor, drops into Duncan Creek valley past overgrown hydraulic cuts and rusted equipment, then grinds north on loose gravel and soft sidehill track toward Ethel Lake. Expect at least two soft creek crossings on Duncan Creek tributaries and stretches of track that vanish into alder for fifty metres at a stretch — you’re navigating as much as driving.

This is real backcountry: high-clearance 4WD with a locker is the baseline, recovery gear is non-negotiable, and a satellite communicator stays clipped to your chest. No cell service anywhere on the loop. Best run late June through August before fall freeze softens the creek margins again. No formal permit but you’re inside Yukon government territorial lands — leave nothing. Ethel Lake Territorial Campground at the north end gives you a fire ring and outhouse after a dirty day in the bush. Fuel up in Mayo before you leave; there’s nothing out here.
