Mayo to Holt Creek Road — Duncan Creek Placer Country

Gold country grit above the Stewart River.

Difficult

Out of Mayo, this route cuts northeast along maintained gravel before dropping into the Duncan Creek drainage — a valley that’s been worked for placer gold since the early 1900s. You’ll pass the ruins of hand-stacked log sluice boxes and collapsed prospect cabins before the road narrows to a two-track shelf pinched between spruce and the creek cutbank. Holt Creek itself requires a ford that runs knee-deep in June snowmelt and drops to axle-deep by August — pick your timing. The approach to the upper workings involves loose shale sidehills that demand attention on the descent.

Moderate-to-difficult by Yukon standards. A high-clearance 4WD is the minimum — a lifted rig with a locker helps on the shale shelf. There are no services past Mayo, so carry 40+ litres of fuel and filter your water from creek sources. Cell service dies in the first valley. Best run July through early September before fall rains turn the clay sections into grease. No formal permit required on territorial Crown land. Dispersed camping is available throughout, with fire rings left by miners and prospectors at the upper flats. This is honest, empty Yukon backcountry — the kind of place you might not see another rig for days.
