Ottawa National Forest Lake Gogebic West Shore Dispersed Sites

A string of informal campsites stretches along Lake Gogebic’s undeveloped western shoreline, offering direct water access and expansive views across Michigan’s largest natural lake. Sites are scattered through mixed hardwood forest with openings to the water, most suitable for 1-2 rigs each. Established fire rings and cleared tent areas show evidence of regular but not heavy use. Popular with anglers targeting walleye and northern pike, particularly busy during fishing opener and fall color season.

Access via Forest Road 400 west of Bergland, following signs toward Lake Gogebic. Road transitions from paved to gravel to rough two-track as you approach the shore. Some sites require short walks from parking areas. Seasonal water access depends on lake levels — spring offers best launching conditions for small watercraft. Pack out all trash and practice Leave No Trace principles.
