Nicolet National Forest Anvil Lake Campground
Anvil Lake sits tucked into the Nicolet National Forest northeast of Eagle River, offering 33 sites split between lakeside and wooded spots. The campground feels genuinely remote — no cell service, no RV hookups, just vault toilets and hand-pump wells. Sites are spacious enough for roof-top tents and trailers, with most offering fire rings and picnic tables. The lake itself is crystal clear with excellent fishing for walleye and bass.
Access is via Forest Road 2178 off Highway 70 — decent gravel but can get washboardy after heavy traffic. Open typically mid-May through October, though spring can be buggy. Reserve ahead for summer weekends, but midweek spots are usually available. The boat launch handles small watercraft only.
