Rattlesnake Rock Campground — Nantahala National Forest
Rattlesnake Rock sits along the Cheoah Ranger District of Nantahala National Forest, a short drive from Robbinsville and squarely in the path of overlanders running the TAT through western North Carolina. It’s a primitive USFS site — vault toilets, fire rings, basic picnic tables, and zero frills. Sites fill up during peak leaf season (October) and holiday weekends, but you can usually find a spot midweek even in summer. Cell signal is essentially nonexistent here, so fuel up and sort your navigation before you roll in.
Access via NC-143 and forest road connectors is manageable for any high-clearance rig, and most 4WD vehicles will have no issues. The Cheoah River corridor nearby adds scenery. Season runs roughly April through November — hard freezes and occasional ice shut this corridor down in winter. Confirm road conditions with the Cheoah Ranger District before committing in early spring.
