Kootenay River Canyon Mining Road

Gold rush history in the Rocky Mountain Trench

Difficult

The Kootenay River Canyon Mining Road traces an old prospector’s route along the river’s east bank, where gold seekers once hauled equipment through terrain that still challenges modern 4WDs. Starting just south of Radium Hot Springs, the 45-kilometer track drops into the river canyon, crossing tributaries on rough log bridges and navigating rockslides that regularly reshape the route. At Pitchoff Creek, remnants of the old Columbia Southern Railway grade are still visible, along with rusted mining equipment from the 1890s boom.

This is serious backcountry requiring high-clearance 4WD and recovery gear — the track gets rougher each year as washouts go unrepaired. Best attempted June through September when water levels drop and weather stabilizes. No services exist along the route, and cell coverage is nonexistent in the canyon depths. The payoff includes pristine fishing holes, hot springs known only to locals, and camping spots where you won’t see another soul. Carry spare parts, fuel, and water for multi-day expeditions.
