Toby Creek FSR to Bugaboo Glacier

Granite spires and glaciers in the Purcells high country.

Expert

Toby Creek FSR climbs relentlessly from the Columbia Valley floor into the heart of the Purcell Mountains, delivering overlanders to one of the most dramatic alpine settings in the Canadian Rockies. The 47-kilometer forest service road starts deceptively easy but transforms into a narrow, rocky ledge system as it gains 4,000 feet through subalpine forest toward Bugaboo Provincial Park. The final approach to Bugaboo Glacier base camp threads between granite towers that make Yosemite look tame, with the Conrad Icefield sprawling across the skyline like a frozen highway to nowhere.

This is expert-level territory demanding lockers, armor, and serious mountain driving experience—the exposure on the upper reaches will test your nerve as much as your vehicle. July through September offers the only reliable access window, with snow blocking the route well into summer most years. No permits required but camping at the glacier requires backcountry registration. Fuel up in Radium Hot Springs and pack extra water—this is serious alpine country where weather changes fast and rescue is measured in days, not hours. The payoff is standing beneath some of the most impressive granite architecture on the continent.
