Forest Road 180 Anna Ruby Falls to Unicoi Gap
Mountain backcountry with multiple creek crossings
Forest Road 180 winds through some of Georgia’s most pristine mountain country, connecting the popular Anna Ruby Falls area to the historic Unicoi Gap along a route that sees maybe a dozen vehicles per day. The road climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forests, crossing Smith Creek three times before reaching the ridgeline at 3,200 feet, where you’ll catch glimpses of the Blue Ridge stretching into North Carolina. The technical section comes after mile marker 7, where recent storm damage has left several large trees requiring careful navigation around or over.
This is moderate-difficulty territory requiring high-clearance 4WD and recovery gear—those creek crossings can get dicey after heavy rain, and cell service disappears completely after the first mile. Best run May through October when the Forest Service keeps the gates open, though early spring offers the most dramatic water flow at the crossings. Dispersed camping is allowed, and you’ll earn solitude that’s increasingly rare in North Georgia’s crowded mountains. Pack extra water and fuel—nearest services are back in Helen, 45 minutes from the trailhead.
