Dempster Highway North Extension — Eagle Plains to Fort McPherson
Arctic Circle or bust — zero cell, zero mercy.
Eagle Plains is the last fuel stop before the world goes quiet. From the Eagle Plains Hotel — the only structure for 180 miles — the Dempster rolls north across the Richardson Mountains, cresting at Wright Pass before the Continental Divide marker at the Arctic Circle. The road surface here alternates between weathered gravel and raw mud depending on season, and the Peel River crossing at Fort McPherson is still a free government-operated ferry in summer and an ice road in winter — there’s no bridge, full stop. The Richardson Mountain views on the descent toward the Mackenzie Delta are some of the most dramatic roadside scenery on the continent.
This stretch is moderate in dry conditions but genuinely brutal after rain — the silty clay surface turns to grease and has swallowed vehicles that weren’t carrying a proper recovery kit and spare set of tires. Budget two spares minimum. Fuel up at Eagle Plains and carry extra — Fort McPherson has limited supplies. Cell service dies north of Eagle Plains entirely. Best window is mid-June to early September; freeze-up and breakup periods close the ferry. A Yukon Parks fire permit may be required for camping along the route.
