Engineer Creek Road — Dempster Highway to Engineer Creek Campground and Ogilvie Ridge

Painted canyons off the loneliest highway.

Moderate

About 194 kilometres north of Dawson on the Dempster Highway, the Ogilvie Mountains press right down onto the road and Engineer Creek carves through them in shades of oxidised red, burnt orange, and cream-white that look fake in photographs and unreal in person. The side track off the Dempster along Engineer Creek runs about twelve kilometres into the canyon before the maintained surface quits and you’re picking your way up loose shale sidehill toward the Ogilvie Ridge viewpoints. The canyon walls close in, the track gets rocky, and the views across the tundra from the high point justify every scrape on your skids.

Mostly suitable for a capable stock 4WD on the maintained lower section to the campground; the upper ridge push demands genuine clearance and a driver who reads lines. The Dempster is notoriously slick in rain — mud here is clay-based and will eat all-season tires for breakfast. Best season is mid-June through mid-September. No permit. Engineer Creek Territorial Campground sits at the canyon mouth and makes a solid basecamp. No cell service. Fuel in Dawson City and at Eagle Plains Lodge — do not assume otherwise.
