Wolfpen Gap Road to Sosebee Cove
North Georgia's hidden high country gravel adventure
Wolfpen Gap Road cuts a serpentine path through some of Georgia’s most remote high country, connecting the Appalachian Trail crossing at Neels Gap to the hidden gem of Sosebee Cove. This 18-mile gravel road climbs through dense hardwood forests and opens onto ridgetop meadows where wild azaleas bloom in impossible profusion each spring. The route passes several significant landmarks including Trahlyta Falls and the ruins of old Appalachian homesteads, with multiple creek crossings that can become challenging during heavy rains.
This is moderate terrain requiring high-clearance vehicles and careful navigation during wet conditions. The road surface varies from maintained gravel to rough two-track with embedded rocks and seasonal washouts. Best tackled April through October when mountain laurel and rhododendron create natural tunnels. No permits required, but dispersed camping follows Leave No Trace principles. Fuel up in Dahlonega or Cleveland – you’re heading into genuine backcountry where cell service disappears and the old Georgia mountains show their wild character.
