Forest Road 28A cuts deep into Bull Mountain’s backcountry, following routes blazed by Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps crews. The circuit starts near Suches and immediately hits you with loose rock climbs, tight switchbacks, and creek crossings that’ll test your departure angles. At mile 8, you’ll encounter the infamous “Bull’s Gate” rock garden that’s stopped plenty of overconfident rigs dead in their tracks.
Difficult rating with expert sections — this isn’t weekend warrior territory. High-clearance 4WD with rock sliders, skid plates, and recovery gear mandatory. Aired-down tires and a winch aren’t luxuries here. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, but winter access requires chains and serious cold-weather prep. No services for 40+ miles, so pack water and fuel. The reward is pristine Appalachian wilderness and camping spots that haven’t seen crowds since the CCC boys packed up.

Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle FR 28A, or do I need a built rig?
Stock rigs will get hurt here. The rock gardens on Bull Mountain require real clearance and skid plates at minimum — underbody armor is not optional. A lifted rig with lockers will handle it far better than anything factory.
When does FR 28A typically close, and is winter access realistic?
The best window is April through November. Winter ice and snow make the rock sections genuinely dangerous, and the Forest Service can gate sections after storms with no warning — don't plan a December run without calling the Chattahoochee-Oconee NF office first.

Is there reliable water on the trail, and how far is the nearest gas from the Suches trailhead?
There are water crossings on the route but don't count on them as a drinking source without filtering — bring more water than you think you need for a 2-3 day run. Gas up in Blairsville or Dahlonega before you head to Suches; services in Suches itself are minimal and you don't want to be doing math on fumes after a full day on the rocks.
