Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge Maintenance Road Complex
Permit-only access to Indiana's premier wetlands complex
The refuge’s restricted maintenance road network opens seasonally to special permit holders, providing access to 7,800 acres of managed wetlands where the East Fork White River creates Indiana’s most extensive floodplain habitat. These service roads follow old drainage ditches and levees built by the Army Corps of Engineers, crossing through bottomland hardwood forests where wild turkeys and white-tailed deer are guaranteed sightings. The route passes several impoundments managed for waterfowl, with observation blinds positioned at key intersections.
Access requires special use permits obtained through the refuge office, typically granted for research, photography, or educational purposes. High-clearance vehicles are essential when roads are muddy, which is most of the time from November through March. The driving is easy but the mud can be axle-deep after rains. Best accessed May through September when roads firm up, though mosquitoes can be brutal. This is Indiana’s premier wildlife viewing opportunity for serious photographers and naturalists willing to jump through the permit hoops.
