Chemin Forestier de la Zec de la Rivière-Rouge — Laurentians Interior Backcountry Circuit

Two hours from Montreal, feels like the edge of the world.

Moderate

Two hours north of Montreal and most people have never heard of this place, which is exactly the point. The ZEC de la Rivière-Rouge operates a controlled-access territory in the heart of the Laurentians where a network of forestry roads serves fishing and hunting camps that haven’t changed much in forty years. The main corridor follows the Rouge River upstream before fragmenting into secondary tracks climbing onto the Shield plateau — cracked granite benches, spruce bog crossings on deteriorating corduroy log bridges, and sudden open ridge views south toward the Ottawa River valley. The creek crossing at Camp Desrochers is the route’s most consistent obstacle: narrow, rocky-bottomed, and slippery on the approach angle. Don’t trust the corduroy sections in any vehicle heavier than a half-ton.

The ZEC charges a daily access fee and requires vehicle registration at the guardhouse on entry — have your information ready and respect the wildlife quotas posted at the gate. This is fundamentally a moderate route, but the corduroy bridge sections and the soft clay cutbanks after rain push it toward difficult for anything larger than a midsize truck. High clearance and 4WD are required; a locker helps on the wet clay grades. Best run June through October. Fuel in L’Annonciation or Labelle — ZEC territories have no services. You’re close to civilization but the territory feels genuinely remote, making it the ideal shakedown run before heading further north.
