Ochre River to Dauphin — Riding Mountain East Escarpment Backroad
Escarpment edge running between the lakes and the plateau.
The eastern escarpment of Riding Mountain is a wall — a sharp, unmistakable rise that separates the Manitoba lowlands from the plateau above. This route follows a series of municipal and provincial backroads along that escarpment face, running roughly north from Ochre River toward Dauphin through Crown land corridors, creek crossings, and sections of unmaintained seasonal track. The Ochre River itself cuts through the route early on — usually shallow and crossable late summer but capable of swallowing a bumper in spring runoff. Hydro cutlines and old logging spurs branch off constantly, so navigation matters here. The payoff is a genuine sense of remoteness tucked between two very familiar highway towns.
This is a moderate run on dry ground — stock high-clearance 4WD handles most of it — but spring turns the clay sections into a skidding mess that’ll humble experienced drivers. Avoid May and early June entirely. A recovery kit, tow straps, and a hi-lift jack are the minimum. Cell service dies within the first few kilometers and stays dead. Fuel up in Dauphin or Ochre River; there’s nothing between them on this route. Dispersed camping is available in the Crown land sections. Best run July through October.
