Lonesome Highway — Siskiyou Crest Road to Ashland via Mount Ashland Spine

Forest Road 40S01 climbs from the Mount Ashland ski area parking lot and traces the Siskiyou Crest west toward Dutchman Peak Lookout, a staffed fire lookout perched at 7,418 feet with unobstructed views into California to the south and Oregon’s Klamath River country to the west. The road is rocky and narrow with exposed shelf sections — passing pullouts are few, and the drop-offs are not for the distracted. The Klamath-Siskiyou region is one of the most botanically diverse places in North America; the serpentine soils up here support plant communities found nowhere else on earth, and the wildflower bloom in July is genuinely spectacular.
The route is doable in a stock 4WD with decent clearance but expect some rocky sections that reward a longer-travel suspension. Snow typically closes the upper road through May or June — call the Ashland Ranger District before you go. No permits needed. Dispersed camping is available along the crest. The Dutchman Peak Lookout is occasionally available for overnight rental through Recreation.gov. Fuel and services in Ashland. Best season is July through October.
