Soda Mountain to Pilot Rock — Cascade-Siskiyou OHV and Backcountry Road

Three mountain ranges, one volcanic plug, zero crowds.

Moderate

Pilot Rock rises 500 feet off the surrounding ridge like someone planted it there as a landmark — because that’s exactly what emigrants and surveyors used it for. The rough BLM two-track climbs south from the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument boundary off Highway 66 through oak savanna and ponderosa pine, past Soda Mountain’s 6,089-foot summit, where on a clear day you’re looking at Mount Shasta to the south and the crater of Mount McLoughlin to the north simultaneously. This is biogeographically weird country — Siskiyou plant communities and Great Basin species mixing with Cascade flora — and the trails reflect it, switching between volcanic rock, packed pumice, and clay soil depending on slope aspect.

The technical rating is moderate to difficult depending on which spur you take toward Pilot Rock. A stock high-clearance 4WD handles the main Soda Mountain road fine, but the push toward the rock base tightens up with embedded basalt and loose shale. No permits required but dispersed camping is strictly regulated within monument boundaries — check the Medford BLM office for current rules. Cell service drops off entirely past the pavement. Best season is June through October. Ashland is your fuel and supply stop, about 14 miles southwest.
