Soda Mountain Road — Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument High Desert Ridge Run

Three mountain ranges, one volcanic ridge, zero crowds.

Moderate

Soda Mountain Road runs the high spine of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument in southern Oregon, crossing the convergence zone where the Cascades, Siskiyous, and Great Basin all collide in one strange, botanically explosive landscape. From the BLM trailhead near Pinehurst, the road climbs to around 6,000 feet along Soda Mountain’s ridgeline, delivering wide-open views across Pilot Rock, Mount Shasta to the south, and the Klamath basin spread wide to the west. The road is a mix of gravel and rough dirt two-track with some loose rocky sections near the summit approach — nothing extreme, but sections get rough enough to punish low-clearance rigs.

A high-clearance 2WD can handle this in dry summer conditions, but after rain the clay sections get slick enough to want 4WD engaged. No permit needed, no fee, and dispersed camping is allowed in designated areas along the monument boundary. Best season is June through October; the road can be snowbound into May. Bring your own water — there’s nothing potable out here. Ashland is your fuel and supply stop. This one rewards the curious: the flora alone — ponderosa, madrone, bitterbrush, and bunchgrass side by side — is genuinely unlike anything else in Oregon.
