El Yunque National Forest Road 186 Extension
Beyond the tourists into El Yunque's forgotten corners.
Road 186 doesn’t end where the pavement stops at the El Portal visitors center — it keeps going as a rough 4WD track that climbs toward Pico del Este and the old Catalina research station ruins. You’ll ford Rio Espiritu Santo twice and navigate around massive cecropia trees that have claimed sections of the original Civilian Conservation Corps roadway. The track passes abandoned concrete platforms where researchers once monitored the rainforest’s response to Hurricane Hugo in 1989.
This is moderate difficulty terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD and recovery gear — the clay becomes impassable soup during rainy season (May-November). Best tackled during dry months with winch capability and traction aids. Water crossings are knee-deep max but flash-flood prone. You’ll earn solitude in Puerto Rico’s only tropical rainforest, plus access to unmarked waterfalls and swimming holes that see maybe a dozen visitors per year. Fuel up in Rio Grande and pack plenty of water.
