El Yunque Peak Summit Road
Technical climb to Puerto Rico's highest peak
El Yunque Peak Summit Road is the only 4WD route to Puerto Rico’s 3,494-foot summit, climbing through four distinct ecosystems from sea level to cloud forest. The road begins as paved Highway 191 but transforms into a technical rock crawl past the Yokahu Tower, with loose volcanic rock, 20-degree grades, and sections where erosion has carved deep channels across the trail. The final two miles require low-range 4WD to navigate over basketball-sized boulders and through dense vegetation that scrapes your paint.
This is difficult terrain demanding high-clearance 4WD with rock sliders and all-terrain tires minimum. The summit often disappears in clouds by 11 AM, so start before dawn for clear views across the entire island and both coastlines. Best tackled during dry season (December through April) when the road isn’t completely washed out. Pack rain gear regardless — El Yunque receives 240 inches annually and weather changes in minutes. The summit offers no camping, but the views from Puerto Rico’s roof make the technical climb worth every scraped panel.
