Cinder Cone Volcanic Loop — Lassen Volcanic National Park Backcountry
Painted dunes and black cinder in volcanic solitude.
Most people drive the main park road and call it done at Lassen, but the Nobles Emigrant Trail corridor and the Butte Lake area in the park’s northeast quadrant are where overlanders find the real thing. The Butte Lake Road (County Road A21 connector) drops you into a landscape that looks like someone transplanted Iceland to Northern California — black cinder flats, the symmetrical 700-foot Cinder Cone volcano, and the Painted Dunes glowing in late afternoon light. The Nobles Trail-adjacent track pushes through thick pumice sand that will sink an underinflated tire in a hurry, and the Snag Lake approach adds genuine remoteness to a park most people experience from a paved pullout. This is a legitimate backcountry vehicle circuit when combined with park-adjacent forest roads on the Lassen National Forest boundary.
High-clearance is mandatory — the pumice sand sections swallow 2WDs whole. Airing down to 20 psi is standard procedure here. A backcountry permit is required for overnight camping in the park’s backcountry zones; the Butte Lake campground provides a legal base camp alternative. Best season is late June through October before early snowfall closes the approaches. Chester or Susanville are your fuel stops. Water is available at Butte Lake but filter everything. Cell service is nonexistent. The solitude-to-scenery ratio here is absurd for a national park.
