Bunny Flat to Sand Flat — Mount Shasta Volcanic Rim Road

Shasta's flanks, pumice, and zero mercy.

Moderate

Mount Shasta doesn’t ease you in. The mountain dominates northern California’s skyline from 100 miles out, and when you’re grinding up the Everitt Memorial Highway and dropping onto the Forest Service spurs toward Sand Flat and the North Gate trailhead, that volcanic cone fills your entire windshield. The route links Bunny Flat (7,950 ft) to Sand Flat via USFS Road 41N60, skirting through old-growth red fir, crossing Panther Creek, and eventually connecting to the north-side roads through Shastina saddle country — loose pumice, embedded volcanic rock, and the occasional snowfield remnant well into July.

This is a high-clearance route, not extreme — a stock 4WD with decent ground clearance handles it fine in dry conditions. The challenge is the elevation, the soft pumice sections, and weather that can flip from sunny to whiteout in an hour. Best window is late July through September. Carry your own water; sources are limited and need filtering. No permit required for driving, though wilderness permits are needed for summit attempts. Dispersed camping is available on USFS land below 8,000 feet. Cell service dies north of McCloud.
