Walhonding River Sand Ridge Trail
Deep sand and ridge country in Knox County forests
The Walhonding River Sand Ridge Trail cuts through some of Ohio’s most unique terrain — glacial sand deposits left behind when the last ice age retreated 12,000 years ago. This network of old logging roads and management tracks winds through Knox County’s forgotten corners, where deep sand pockets can swallow a stock truck whole and rocky creek crossings test your line choice. The main route follows old timber company roads from the county line to Honey Creek, passing through sections where sand gets hub-deep and traction disappears fast.
This is moderate to difficult terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD with good ground clearance — sand ladders aren’t a bad idea if you’re running street tires. Best tackled late spring through fall when creek levels are manageable and the sand has dried out from winter melt. No permits needed on state forest land, but bring extra water and fuel since civilization feels a long way off. You’ll earn quiet camping spots along the ridgelines and some of the best whitetail country in central Ohio.
