Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District Tappan Lake Technical Challenge

Strip mine technical in Ohio's coal country

Difficult

Tappan Lake sits in what used to be Ohio coal country, and the spider web of old mining roads and modern dam maintenance routes around its shoreline tells that story in rutted, rocky detail. The main technical challenge follows the old Pennsylvania Railroad grade north from the dam, then loops back through reclaimed strip mines where highwall benches create natural rock steps and water-filled mining cuts force creative route-finding. The highlight — or lowlight — is the rock garden climb up to the old Deersville Mine portal, where loose shale and off-camber slopes separate the prepared from the overconfident.

This is honest difficult terrain that demands lockers and rock sliders. The MWCD keeps some roads open for dam inspection and wildlife management, but others exist in legal gray areas — local knowledge helps. Spring brings muddy conditions that can strand vehicles for days; fall offers the best traction and visibility. No official camping, but the adjacent Tappan Lake Park has facilities. You’ll share these routes with coal trucks during weekdays, so plan accordingly. The payoff is technical driving few Ohioans know exists, plus views over the lake that put the state’s mining heritage in perspective.
