Schreiber Creek Mining Road

Mining road to Purcell Mountain silver claims

Difficult

Schreiber Creek Road punches 28 kilometers into the Purcell Mountains from Highway 3A near Crawford Bay, accessing abandoned silver-lead mining claims that date to the 1890s. The route follows Schreiber Creek through old-growth cedar stands before climbing into alpine meadows where rusted mining equipment still dots the landscape. Multiple creek crossings become serious obstacles during spring runoff, and the final approach to the old Bluebell Mine requires careful line choice through boulder fields and steep switchbacks.

Difficult rating earned through technical rock sections, multiple water crossings, and potential for washouts. Stock 4WD with skid plates minimum — locking differentials recommended for creek crossings. June through September offers best conditions when water levels drop. No cell service beyond the highway. Bring recovery gear and spare parts for the 56-kilometer round trip. The payoff includes pristine camping beside mountain tarns, historical mining exploration, and views across Kootenay Lake that justify every scraped skid plate.
