Yaak River Dispersed Camping

Remote riverside sites along the Yaak River where grizzlies outnumber people and cell towers don't exist.

Scattered primitive sites along the Yaak River in the heart of grizzly country. Most spots are pull-offs big enough for a truck and trailer, with fire rings left by previous campers. The river runs clear and cold — good for filtering water but too frigid for swimming even in summer. Zero amenities, zero people most of the time. This is proper wilderness camping where you’ll hear wolves howling at night.

Access via Yaak River Road (Forest Road 92) west of Highway 508. Road is gravel, sometimes rough after spring runoff or heavy rain. No cell service whatsoever. Pack bear spray and know how to use it — this isn’t tourist country. Snow closes upper reaches from November through April.
