Built in 1942, this restored fire lookout crowns Sulphur Mountain at 8,400 feet in the Kootenai National Forest. The 14×14-foot cab provides 360-degree views spanning Glacier National Park, Lake Koocanusa, and the rugged Cabinet Mountains Wilderness. Original Osborne firefinder equipment remains intact, along with period furnishings that transport visitors back to the golden age of fire detection. The tower operates with volunteer interpreters during summer months.
The final 2 miles to the lookout follow a steep, rocky road requiring 4WD and high clearance. Snow typically blocks access from October through June. The road can be treacherous when wet, with loose rock and narrow sections lacking guardrails. Dispersed camping is available at lower elevations, but no facilities exist at the tower site itself.
