This restored Depression-era fire lookout sits atop a rocky outcrop in the Cabinet Mountains of northwest Montana, accessible via a steep but manageable 14-mile forest road. The 40-foot wooden tower, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, provides commanding views of Glacier National Park, Lake Pend Oreille, and the Selkirk Range. The lookout is staffed seasonally and visitors can climb to the observation deck during daylight hours.
Forest Road 278 requires high-clearance but not 4WD in dry conditions. Road can be rough and muddy in spring, impassable in winter. Best accessed July through September when snow has cleared the higher elevations.
