Lonesome Lake Road — Cabinet Mountains Wilderness Approach
Grizzly country the crowds never find.
Northwest Montana’s Cabinet Mountains get far less traffic than Glacier to the north, and the backcountry access roads off the Bull River and Vermilion River drainages in Lincoln and Sanders counties are some of the most underused overland ground in the lower 48. Lonesome Lake Road climbs from the Bull River valley — accessed off Montana Highway 56 — up through dense western red cedar and hemlock forest before breaking into open talus slopes beneath the Cabinet Mountain peaks. The road roughens considerably past the lower trailheads, with embedded rock, narrow shelf sections above creek drainages, and multiple small stream crossings. Bull Lake to the south offers fuel and basic services; the nearest real resupply is Libby or Troy. Keep eyes open for moose in the lower valley wetlands and grizzly bear in the upper basins — both are common here.
This is a high-clearance 4WD route with sections that push toward difficult, particularly after spring runoff. The creek crossings are manageable in late summer but can run thigh-deep in June. Best window is late July through September — snow closes the upper sections by October. No permit is required for vehicle travel, though the adjacent wilderness is foot-traffic only. Dispersed camping is legal on Kootenai National Forest land outside wilderness boundaries. Cell service is nonexistent. What you gain here is genuine grizzly country solitude and old-growth forest that most Montana visitors never see.
