Bowman Lake Dispersed Camping
A cluster of primitive sites scattered around the shoreline and granite slabs above Bowman Lake at 5,568 feet elevation. The lake sits in classic Sierra granite country with scattered pines and dramatic rock formations. Sites are mostly pull-outs among the trees or on flat granite areas. No facilities whatsoever — pack it in, pack it out. Fire restrictions in effect during dry season. The area fills up on summer weekends with both overlanders and day-use boaters.
Access is via Bowman Lake Road (Forest Road 18), which starts paved but turns to rough dirt with some challenging rocky sections. High-clearance 4WD recommended, especially for the last few miles. The road is typically open June through October, snow-dependent. No cell service. Popular with the Northern California 4×4 crowd who’ve been coming here for decades.
