Donner Pass Road Dispersed Camping
Scattered pullouts and flat spots along the old Donner Pass Road (Donner Pass Road/Old Highway 40) offer free dispersed camping above 7,000 feet with expansive views of the Tahoe basin. Sites range from single-vehicle spots to areas that can handle 2-3 rigs, most with existing fire rings and room for rooftop tents. Snow covers this area October through May, making it a summer-only option.
Access via the graded dirt Donner Pass Road from either I-80 or Highway 89. Some washboard sections but passable by any high-clearance vehicle. No water or facilities — pack everything in and out. Popular with motorcycles and ATV riders on weekends.
