Emigrant Gap Natural Spring

Water Source

This natural spring bubbles from granite bedrock at the old Emigrant Gap townsite, providing cold, clear water that’s been used by travelers for over 150 years. The spring flows consistently year-round, creating a small pool before draining downhill. Local knowledge suggests the water is clean and safe, though as always, treat or filter if you’re concerned about backcountry sources.

Access via the old Emigrant Gap Road off I-80 – look for the historical markers near the railroad overpass. The spring sits about 100 yards uphill from the parking area on a faint trail. It’s a quick stop for water and a connection to the original emigrant route through the Sierra.
