Corral Hollow Trail
This is one of those trails that makes you remember why you wheel. Starting out with a steep climb through thick mule ear meadows to a high ridge, Corral Hollow delivers beautiful views of Bear Valley Ski Area and Mokelumne Wilderness. The trail runs about 13-14 miles through a variety of scenery, from forest gullies to open ridge tops.
The pitch about 1/4 mile in is very steep and rocky, making the eastern entrance the more technical approach. The east side is steep, narrow, rutted and rocky in spots while the west side is more downhill and easier. Suitable for stock, high-clearance 4×4 SUVs, though a few short sections of steep hills and loose rock may present some challenges for new off-roaders in stock 4x4s.
The unusual 2-story Bear Trap Cabin is believed to be an old cowboy cabin, owned and maintained by the U.S. Forest Service and in remarkably good condition. A few choice camp spots along the ridge offer spectacular overnight opportunities. Fairly easy trail with great views, tight turns here and there with last two miles of East side entrance being the hardest.
Roads leading to this trailhead are subject to seasonal closure in the winter months, so check conditions before heading out. This isn’t a destination trail — it’s an experience.
